🔊 What Your Guinea Pig's Sounds Mean

Wheeking, purring, rumbling, teeth chattering and popcorning, decoded so you know what your pig is telling you.

Guinea pigs are surprisingly chatty, and once you learn their vocabulary you can read their mood from across the room. Here is what the main sounds and moves mean.

• Wheeking — the loud, excited squeal, usually aimed at you when the fridge opens or a bag rustles. It means 'food, now, please'. A happy, demanding sound.
• Purring (low and relaxed) — a deep, steady purr while being stroked means contentment. A higher, shorter purr can mean annoyance, so read the body too.
• Rumbling — a deeper purr paired with a little hip-swaying strut ('rumblestrutting') is courtship or a dominance display, common when pigs sort out who is boss.
• Chutting and chirping — soft, happy background chatter while pottering about. A rare, bird-like chirping song is unusual and still a bit of a mystery.
• Teeth chattering — a rapid clicking of the teeth is a clear 'back off, I am annoyed'. Give them space, especially when two pigs first meet.
• Shrieking — a sudden high scream means pain or fear. Check on them straight away.
• Popcorning — not a sound but pure joy: little jumps and twists in the air, most often in young, happy pigs. Cherish it.
