✂️ How to Trim Guinea Pig Nails

A calm, step-by-step way to keep nails short, find the quick, and handle a wriggler.

Guinea pig nails grow constantly and, unlike in the wild, do not wear down on soft bedding. Left long they curl and catch, so a quick trim every 3 to 4 weeks keeps their feet healthy.

What you need

A pair of small nail clippers (human ones work for small pigs) and a little styptic powder in case you nick the quick.

Finding the quick

The quick is the pink blood vessel inside the nail. On pale nails you can see it, so trim a little below it. On dark nails you cannot, so take only tiny slivers off the tip. Better too little than too much.

The trim

Have a helper hold the pig against their chest, or 'burrito' it in a towel with one foot out at a time.
Trim just the hooked tip of each nail, holding the foot gently and staying calm.
If you catch the quick, press styptic powder on it, comfort the pig, and carry on or stop for the day.
