☀️ Keeping Guinea Pigs Cool in Summer

Guinea pigs overheat easily and heatstroke can kill fast. Simple ways to keep them safe when it is hot.

Guinea pigs cope far better with cool than with heat, and heatstroke can kill quickly. Above about 26C (80F) you need to act, and their spot should never be in direct sun.

Keep them cool

Move the cage to the coolest, shadiest room, away from windows and conservatories.
Freeze water bottles or a ceramic tile and set them in the cage to lean against.
Offer extra water and plenty of hydrating veg like cucumber and leafy greens.
Use a fan for airflow, but point it near the cage, not straight at the pigs.
Draw the curtains during the hottest part of the day.

Signs of heatstroke

Panting, drooling, lying flat and lethargic, or unresponsive. Cool them gradually with a damp, cool (not cold) cloth on the feet and ears, and get to a vet immediately. Never plunge an overheated pig into cold water.

In a the Houston area summer this really matters. If a room regularly climbs above the mid-20s Celsius, air conditioning is the safest answer for your pigs.
