Guinea pigs are prey animals. How to keep them safe around dogs, cats and other pets.
A guinea pig is a prey animal, and to a dog or cat it can look like a squeaky toy or a snack. Many households keep them together happily, but it takes sensible rules, because even a gentle pet can do harm in a single instinctive moment.
Never leave guinea pigs unsupervised with a cat or dog. Not for a minute. A secure cage with a solid or mesh lid, ideally raised off the floor and in a room the predator cannot access unwatched, is your baseline.
Some calm dogs learn to ignore the pigs entirely. Introduce slowly, dog on a lead, pig safe in its cage, and reward calm behaviour. A high prey drive means keep them apart, full stop.
Cats are natural hunters and can reach into cages, so protect the top with a secure mesh lid. Supervise every interaction and give the pigs plenty of covered hides so they never feel exposed.
