Guinea pigs live longer than most people expect. Planning for their whole life, senior years included, is part of taking one on.

The average lifespan

Most guinea pigs live 5 to 7 years, and some reach 8 or more with good care. That is far longer than a hamster, so a pig brought home for a child is a commitment well into their teens.

What helps them live longer

Unlimited grass hay and a vitamin-C-rich diet (scurvy quietly shortens many lives).
A large, clean cage and a companion to keep them active and content.
Weekly weigh-ins to catch problems early, and an exotic vet who knows guinea pigs.

Caring for a senior pig

From about age five, watch for stiffness, weight loss and dental trouble. Make hay and water easy to reach, add soft bedding for sore joints, keep nails and long coats trimmed, and weigh weekly without fail. Senior pigs are gentle, affectionate companions and often the most rewarding to care for.

A sudden drop in weight or appetite in an older pig is always worth a vet visit. Small animals hide illness well, and early action saves lives.
