🍓 Healthy Homemade Guinea Pig Treats

Skip the sugary shop treats. The best snacks are fresh, cheap, and things you already have.

Most commercial guinea pig treats, the yoghurt drops, honey sticks and seed bars, are exactly what a pig should not eat: sugar, dairy and fat. The best treats cost almost nothing and come from your fridge and garden.

Treats that are just good food

  • A single strawberry, a strip of bell pepper, or a slice of cucumber. Check anything new on our food checker first.
  • A sprig of cilantro, basil, dill or parsley, herbs are a huge hit and healthy.
  • A few pea flakes, a popular, pig-safe training treat.

Five-minute DIY enrichment treats

  • Stuffed toilet roll: pack a plain cardboard tube with hay and tuck a little veg inside.
  • Forage tray: scatter pellets and herbs through a handful of hay so they have to hunt.
  • Herb 'kebab': thread safe greens onto a strand of timothy hay.
  • Summer cooler: a piece of chilled (not frozen) cucumber on a hot day.
Never bake treats or add honey, sugar, seeds, nuts, dairy or grains, a guinea pig gut cannot handle them. And forage only fresh-picked, unsprayed plants; check our toxic plants list before you pick anything.
