🤲 How to Hold & Handle a Guinea Pig

Pick them up the safe way, build trust, and teach children to handle a piggy gently.

Guinea pigs are prey animals, so being lifted feels like being grabbed by a hawk until they learn to trust you. Handle them right and they settle into wonderful, cuddly companions.

The safe way to pick one up

Approach calmly and scoop from the side or underneath with both hands, never swooping down from above.
One hand supports the chest, the other cups the bottom, they have fragile spines and hate feeling unsupported.
Hold them snug against your chest so they feel secure, and keep sessions short at first.

Building trust

Sit by the cage and talk softly. Hand-feed a piece of bell pepper or cilantro until they come to you. Let them choose to approach; chasing a pig around the cage undoes weeks of progress in a minute.

Children and guinea pigs

Kids and piggies are a lovely match, with rules: always sit on the floor to hold one (so a wriggle cannot become a fall), supervise young children, and keep it gentle and calm. A dropped guinea pig can be badly hurt. See are guinea pigs good pets for kids.

Signs a pig wants down: squirming, teeth chattering, or trying to hide its head. Pop them back gently and try again another day. Trust is built in minutes at a time.
