❤️ Guinea Pig Health Basics: Signs of a Healthy Cavy
A quick weekly check, the warning signs that mean a vet visit, and why they need an exotics vet.
Guinea pigs hide illness well, so a simple weekly once-over and knowing the red flags can save a life.
A healthy pig looks like
- Bright, clear eyes and nose, no discharge.
- Steady weight (weigh weekly on a kitchen scale, this is the single best early warning).
- Eating hay constantly and producing lots of firm droppings.
- Active, curious, and vocal (wheeking, purring).
See a vet promptly if
- They stop eating or pooping for even a day (a true emergency, their gut can shut down fast).
- Sudden weight loss, labored breathing, or crusty eyes/nose.
- Hair loss, scabs, or intense scratching (often mites, very treatable).
- Any lump, limp, or a pig sitting hunched and quiet.
Find an exotics vet now, not later. Not every vet treats guinea pigs. Search for a "small animal exotic vet" near you and keep the number on the fridge. A weekly weigh-in plus a good diet prevents most problems in the first place.
