🧼 Grooming a Long-Haired Guinea Pig

How to brush, comb, and trim a Peruvian, Silkie or Texel so their coat stays clean and mat-free.

Long-haired guinea pigs are stunning, but that coat does not look after itself. Breeds like the Peruvian, Silkie (Sheltie), Texel and Coronet grow hair that keeps getting longer, and left alone it drags in bedding, food and droppings, then mats against the skin. Good news: ten minutes of grooming a few times a week keeps them comfortable and gorgeous.

What you need

A short, kind kit does it: a soft slicker brush, a fine metal comb, blunt-tip grooming scissors, and a set of small nail clippers. That is it.

The routine

Brush 2 to 4 times a week. Work in the direction the hair grows, in small sections, holding the base so you do not tug the skin.
Comb out tangles before they become mats. A knot the size of a pea today is a matted clump next week.
Trim the 'skirt'. Keep the hair around the bottom and belly short so it stays clean. Many owners keep long-hairs in a neat trim rather than full show length, it is far easier to maintain.
Spot-clean the rear and feet with a damp cloth. Full baths are rarely needed and dry them out, once every couple of months at most.

Watch for mats near the skin. If a mat is tight against the body, cut it out carefully with blunt scissors rather than pulling. If the skin looks red or flaky underneath, see an exotic vet.

Nails and beyond

Trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks, taking just the tips to avoid the quick. Keep some styptic powder on hand. While you groom, run your hands over the body: you are also doing a weekly health check for lumps, scabs or weight changes.
