🐾 Do Guinea Pigs Need a Friend?

Guinea pigs are herd animals. Why one is usually a lonely one, and how to pick a compatible pair.

The short answer is yes. Guinea pigs are herd animals that live in groups in the wild, and companionship is not a luxury for them, it is a need. In some countries it is even illegal to keep just one.

Why pairs are happier

A guinea pig with a friend has someone to talk to, groom, and huddle with. Solo pigs are more prone to stress, boredom and depression, and no amount of human attention fully replaces another pig, because you cannot be there at 3am when they fancy a chat.

Good combinations

Two females — often the easiest pairing.
A neutered male with one or more females — works well once he is neutered and fully healed.
Two males — can work, best with plenty of space and no females nearby to squabble over.

Keep same-sex pairs unless the male is neutered, or you will have babies fast. Introduce new pigs carefully on neutral ground (see our bonding guide).

Adopting an already-bonded pair from a rescue is the easy button: they are settled together and you skip the introductions. Whatever you choose, size the cage for two from the start.
