The American is the classic guinea pig: a short, smooth coat that lies flat, in every colour you can imagine. It is by far the most common breed and the easiest to care for.
Grooming is minimal, an occasional brush and the usual nail trims, which makes the American a great choice for first-time owners and children.
They are known for being easy-going and friendly, and they show off their colours without any of the coat maintenance the long-hairs demand.
