5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Getting a Long-Haired Guinea Pig

August 3, 2026 · The CavyCrew team

1. They need a friend. Guinea pigs are herd animals. One pig is a lonely pig, so plan for a pair from day one.

2. The cage is always too small. Whatever the pet shop sells you, double it. A pair wants at least 10.5 square feet of open floor.

3. Grooming is a routine, not a rescue mission. Ten minutes a few times a week keeps a long coat mat-free. Skip a fortnight and you are cutting out mats instead.

4. Vitamin C is not optional. They cannot make their own, and scurvy sneaks up quietly. Bell pepper daily, plus a supplement.

5. Find the exotic vet before you need one. Not every vet sees guinea pigs. Keep the number of one that does on the fridge.
